Social Media during Political Unrest

How a hashtag goes around the world to inform people

The hashtag #WhereisNkurunziza is currently going all around the world, starting from Burundi. There the president has gone into hiding from an attempted coup and now the government shut down the internet and mobile device connection. Meanwhile, the whole world is searching for Burundi to find out what exactly is happening there, as this tweet shows

Not many do know what is happening in Burundi at the moment. All we do know is that the rise of social media allowed young people to mobilize quicker than ever before to protest. It wouldn't be a surprise to see a coup happening in another country in which the economic situation is bad, and young people can use social media to meet up.

Social media case study: Veggie Pizza Peru

Hello dear audience! I am proudly writing to you today, to share a case study on what I think is a true example of a small business using social media: VeggiePizza Peru.

For a bit of background info, VeggiePizza is a vegeterian pizza restaurant located in Lima, Peru who opened a few years ago. Today, they are very well known for their delicious pizzas, creative atmosphere and innovative efforts.

I believe that one of the reasons why they have become so well known, is their excellent use of social media. It only takes to look at their Facebook page to understand:

https://www.facebook.com/VeggiePizzaPE?fref=ts

The owners are 3 young brothers, and we can notice the influence of a "young" perspective when we look at their pages. What makes the biggest difference, in my opinion, is their personal input. It's not just about promoting, but it's also sharing ideas and thoughts which makes them reach the deep connection with their fans.

They are always posting new content featuring new dishes, events, employees, ideas on sustainability, as well as constantly posting pictures of their usual products, and inviting you to taste them. The responsible for the facebook page, is always answering to comments. As you can imagine most of them are very positive, and they have a 4.5 star rating out of 5!

The gallery below displays some examples of their posts. They are in Spanish, but the pictures speak for themselves! Enjoy, and ... Yes, i am craving pizza too.

          Promotion of some healthy treats!

Promotion of one of the employees, telling a bit about her life and how she got to Veggie Pizza

Promotion of a charity

Lunch promotion

Promotion of an artist

Promotion of a new delivery service

Promotion of new wedding event catering

Why Facebook was able to dominate social media

Have you ever asked yourself why Facebook was able to dominate Social Media despite coming second?

Find the answer here!!!

“The real problem was that the world had been trained by MySpace that social networking was interesting, but the actual product had been perfected by Facebook,”
Facebook’s killer feature was that it replicated the real world by forcing people to use their real names, whereas MySpace users used pseudonymous handles, says Jones.
When MySpace started, the concept of giving out your real name, your identity, or photos of yourself to a website were all considered “risky behaviours.” MySpace began the process of convincing people to move past that fear. Facebook ended that discussion.

Proclaim "Social Media Day" in your State!

Nowadays, most people use social media and it has become an essential component in most of our lives. It has revolutionized how we interact with friends and strangers alike, and gave companies a new way to market to the potential customers.

Time that we honour our friend, the social media!

Submit a proclamation request in your city hall, to get a chance to have a day where we can celebrate social media! Currently, the 31st of June is set aside in some states as Social Media day. To submit a proclamation request, go through the steps you can find here.

Don't you also want the Major in your city to sign a document like this? So go ahead and submit a proclamation request at your city hall! :)

UK Elections - #WhyImVotingUkip

So I am sure that all of you know a bit about the UK political party system. There is this one party called UK Independence Party (UKIP) which has made a name for itself for spreading a populistic mindset of hating on foreigners in the UK. The former head of UKIP, Nigel Farage, has gained "popularity" in Great Britain and around the world as the party's mouthpiece. Recently, Twitter exploded with sarcastic comments by Brits of why they are voting UKIP. To see the 16 most hilarious ones, click here.

This is my personal favorite :D (thanks to @sid0ni0 for this amazing post)

ISIL Social Media Attack on the US

How the Islamic State is using social media to recruit operatives in the US

ISIL is now increasingly using social media to radicalise US citizens. ISIL recruiters especially like to use Twitter from safe havens in Syria to find volatile individuals and then lead them to venues where they will be welcomed by ISIL members. The difficulty for law enforcement here, is that the new recruits receive their venues encrypted, leading to the fact that often the trail is lost.

So beware when you are roaming through Twitter!

If some shady people write to you and you feel like they could belong to ISIL, contact law enforcement immediately

UEFA Lecture by David Farelly

Readers! Exciting news!

Today at our Social media lecture we had the honor of having guest speaker David Farelly,  the head of Communications and president & Executive Office of the UEFA giving us a lecture about the organizations use of social media.

For background info, UEFA stands for Union of European Football Associations and they are mostly known for organizing the Champions league.

Did you know that Champions league Facebook's page has more fans than FIFA?!

Farelly gave us a very interesting insight on the complexities of managing social media for such a large organization. The UEFA page must follows many difficulties such as

a) guidelines regarding what kind of material to post
b) Contracts to respect
c) Reaching agreements with the athletes and clubs

Overall, it was a great learning experience for both fans and non-fans of football.
